How Fast Should You Lose Weight?

losing weight

Over the weekend, I got to spend a lot of time with family and friends… and, as is usually the case, a few folks asked me some fitness & weight loss related questions.

One of them was:
How fast should I be losing weight? Shouldn’t it be a pound per week, at least??
It seems to be a pretty popular question, so I wanted to share my answer with you:

Losing a pound a week is an incredible rate of weight loss.

This is the case for many reasons, but most notably because your weight loss isn’t happening in a vaccum.

You’re losing the weight while:
✅ holding a job
✅ taking care of your kids / grandkids
✅ having to help out with your parents who are getting older and need your help
✅ running a household, a family, and a social life.

You’ve got a lot of stuff going on, to say the least!

All that being said, if you’re still managing to lose a pound per week, give yourself a HUGE amount of credit.

And if your weight loss rate is SLOWER than a pound per week, that is 1000000% okay.

A slower rate of weight loss – 0.5lb per week, for instance – just means you are allowing yourself a little more wiggle room to enjoy life.

You’ll get to where you want to be eventually, it will just take you a bit longer.

And one last thing I want to point out to EVERYONE on a weight loss journey:

There will be fluctuations… your weight will go down, plateau, even maybe spike a little bit.
This is all normal… just keep going.

Weight loss takes time, and when you do it the right way (proper cal deficit, not starving yourself) you’ll keep the weight off forever.
