When I sit down with a new client and ask them what they want….
I hear the same things every time.
Lose weight.
Lose fat.
Get stronger.
Build muscle.
Stay healthy as I age.
You know what I almost never hear?
“I want to become more flexible.”
Not once.
And yet, within the first few weeks of working together, almost every single one of them says it.
“You know what…. I’m really not flexible enough.”
Yep.
Every time.
Flexibility doesn’t sound sexy, but it is super important.
Lack of flexibility is the thief that steals our health and fitness.
When you can’t move through a full range of motion, you short-change every single exercise you do.
You get less out of the work you’re already putting in.
And at in the worst case scenario, you get yourself into positions your body can’t safely get out of.
That’s where the back pain starts.
The shoulder pain.
The knee and hip pain that creeps in slowly…
Until one day it’s not slow anymore, and it’s just… easier to stop.
But the most important thing to understand is this:
It’s not the exercise causing the pain.
It’s the accumulated stress on stiff muscles and immobile joints that were already struggling long before you walked into the gym.
And flexibility isn’t just about muscles.
There’s fascia.
Ligaments.
Tendons.
And then on top of all of that – joint mobility.
Think about how many hours you’ve spent sitting in a chair or a car over the last 20 years.
Your joints were designed to move.
They haven’t been.
So it’s really no wonder they’re not working the way they should.
This is one of the most overlooked pieces of the whole fitness puzzle, and nearly 20 years in, I’d argue it’s one of the most important.
Whether you’re deep into your fitness journey or just getting started, understand that flexibility and mobility aren’t optional add-ons.
They’re the foundation everything else is built on.
