What You Think vs. The Truth

A video still of a man in a gym demonstrating an exercise that targets the arms and lats.

I’m gonna lay it all out there… no sugar coating things… so if you’re feeling a little thin-skinned, maybe skip this one…

OR, buckle up and read. Your choice.

Here we go:

You think the following needs to happen for weight loss:

  • omitting entire food groups
  • incessant cardio
  • massive calorie deficit

Here’s what ACTUALLY needs to happen for you to lose weight:

GET A GRIP ON YOUR EMOTIONAL EATING.

Now, before you get offended, at least hear me out.

Emotional eating happens waaaaaaay more often than people think it does. Most folks assume that the definition of “emotional eating” is when someone hides in their dark basement and stuffs an entire bag of Oreos down their throat because they got dumped by their significant other.

Wrong.

It happens to most people at some point in their lifespan.

I’d guess that if you have been making efforts at weight loss, but haven’t seen any progress, emotional eating might be taking place for you.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Do you…

… eat when you’re stressed?
… eat when you’re mad or sad?
… eat when you’re sad/anxious/depressed?
… turn to food as a way to comfort yourself in hard times?

You might not even be aware that you’re doing these things. But think hard about it- have you ever pulled the ice cream out of the freezer or opened a bottle of wine because you just needed to “take the edge off” and soothe your stress a bit?

Like I said, it happens.

But if it happens regularly, it puts a huge obstacle in the way of weight loss and/or being healthy.

So what can you do?

In short, I encourage you to ‘Do the deep work on YOU.’

Address your mental and emotional struggles.

πŸ›‘ STOP ignoring them, masking them, or covering them up.

Doing mindset work, participation in therapy, getting a coach or mentor, or journaling are all examples of BETTER coping strategies than using food/drink.

When you come face to face with your biggest struggles and demons… and then work through them, you’ll be able to look in the mirror πŸͺž and appreciate & respect who you see.

And THAT is the key πŸ”‘ to long-term success.
