My mom is profoundly Deaf, and my father has severe hearing impairment.
Before today, 99% of you would be wondering what CODA meant… but thanks to the film of the same name, my bet is that you recognized this acronym.
I’m sharing this information with you as it relates to current events… the movie CODA won several Oscars last night, including Best Picture.
If you followed any of the coverage of the Oscars, you’ll know that this was an incredibly big deal… a small, independent film winning such a big award.
It was the 1st movie from a streaming service to win best picture.
It was HUGE for the Deaf community and its supporters/advocates.
I was especially thrilled and excited because I had the amazing opportunity to work on this film in a consulting role with director Sian Heder.
Connected via a friend, Sian reached out to me in 2017 asking to pick my brain and get some insight on what, exactly, life was like for a CODA.
She explained that she was writing a movie script and wanted to honor it by making it as truthful as possible. She asked me questions about what my childhood was like.
I shared some of my funniest, most embarrassing, and heartfelt experiences with her.
In return, she shared the script with me to review and offer feedback.
In her email she said to me “fingers crossed this movie gets made.”
Imagine that….
Imagine pouring your entire heart and soul into a project - a dream - not even knowing that it would come to fruition….
Imagine doing so for YEARS….
Imagine doing so for YEARS to then have the movie be made and premiere at Sundance, with critical acclaim and multiple awards.
Imagine doing all of that - you’d think that dream would be big enough.
Quit while you’re ahead, right?
But imagine then DARING to dream even BIGGER….
Imagine daring to DREAM that this indie film juuuuust might win some more big awards:
Writers Guild Award
Producers Guild of America Award
British Academy Film Award
and most recently last night Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture.
Remember Sian’s words to me back in 2017: “fingers crossed this movie gets made.”
That’s pretty incredible.
But it reminds me of SUCH an important lesson: never, ever, EVER give up on your dreams.
Work hard, persevere, push through hard, and when you’re ready to give up, hang on just a bit more because greatness is coming.
And when you’ve reached that dream, give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back, and then set your sights on something even bigger.
There’s no stopping you.
I am overflowing with joy today…for Sian, her team, the Deaf community, the CODA community, and everyone who was touched by this film.
If you haven’t yet seen it - put it at the top of your list!
