There are certain things we do daily (sometimes twice a day) to maintain our hygiene.
We brush our teeth, apply deodorant, change our clothes, put on fresh underwear, bathe/shower…. You get it.
Would you say that you *love* doing any of those things??
Sure, some days it might feel really good to take a cold shower or wash your face, but these tasks usually aren’t the highlight of the day.
We do them because we realise that we need to in order to stay healthy….and if we went for a period of time without doing them, parts of our health would suffer.
We learn this lesson pretty early as kids, and grow up to be adults who have good physical hygiene. So, it begs the question: why does the emotional hygiene of most people STINK?!??!?
You might have never even heard of the term “emotional hygiene” before, let alone know what an emotional hygiene routine entails. In a nutshell, emotional hygiene is what we do daily to keep our emotional health in check. It’s the way we manage stress, it’s the way we choose to either react or respond to a situation, it’s the way we speak about ourselves and refer to ourselves.
What makes up an emotional hygiene routine?
Here’s a sample:
- Deep breathing
- Reciting a mantra
- Reading a mission statement or goal declaration sheet
- Writing daily gratitudes
- Meditation
- Walking without technology distraction
- Speaking positive affirmations
If I had to guess, I’d guess that you brush your teeth and change your underwear without fail daily…. But do you engage in an emotional hygiene routine? If you don’t, you should start.
Why?
Well, to keep it super simple: because stress management is the single most important thing when it comes to weight loss, improved fitness, and overall happiness..
If you can’t successfully manage stress in healthy way(s), you’ll never be able to make supportive nutrition choices, exercise regularly, or sleep soundly.
Life without stress isn’t real. You must accept it as an inevitable part of your journey. And, in doing so, you also must find the best & most healthy ways to manage and mitigate it. Improving your emotional hygiene is the most simple and effective way to do that.
