There’s more than one way to approach it, but many of the approaches are (in my opinion) too extreme.
I think this happens because by the time a person is finally ready to take the 1st step toward looking & feeling better, they’ve been looking and feeling like crap for so long that they’re SICK of it!
Fed up, exasperated, sick and tired of being sick and tired.
That’s how most people feel when they decide to take the 1st step on the journey… they begin the journey because they simply cannot stand the way things are anymore.
And that level of frustration usually leads to an extreme approach.
Going from 0 days of exercise per week to 6 or 7.
Cutting out entire food groups & eating grilled chicken and salad only.
Drinking a gallon of water a day.
And doing all of these AT THE SAME TIME!
Doing all of this at once is way too extreme.
In 99.9% of cases, it will lead to burn out, more frustration of a different kind, and - ultimately - a deeper feeling of failure than ever before.
My strong advice is to do your best to ignore the frustrated, aggravated voice inside you that’s encouraging you to “DO IT ALL, RIGHT NOW!” and take a more balanced approach.
#1: List out the things you know need to change in order for you to reach your goal
- Exercise
- Healthy nutrition choices
- Adequate hydration
- Get enough sleep
- Stress management techniques
- Self-care
#3: Don’t select the most difficult one first… choose something that seems do-able to start.
#4: When you feel comfortable doing that item, add another one in.
Will this approach take longer? Yes.
But this approach is the sure-fire way to build good habits upon good habits and reach success THAT LASTS!
Last I checked, nobody wants to lose weight or get fit for a few months and then go right back to where they were…. Or worse.
So, take the right approach and do the work that creates the balanced lifestyle that produces the results you want for the long run.
