These statements are actually wrong.
The word COMMITMENT means “a promise to do or give something.” So then WHY do we “Commit” to more promises than we can possibly follow through on?
It’s because what’s actually happening is that we are over scheduled and under committed. This comes from the human behavior tendency that if our schedules look “full” or we feel “really busy” it must mean that we are doing something right. So we schedule a whole bunch of “stuff” that we aren’t truly committed to. On the contrary, if our schedules aren’t jam packed (and double booked in some places), then we must not be working hard enough, or that we are lazy.
THIS IS NOT TRUE.
In fact, many of the most successful people that I know have schedules that look moderately simple…. 4 or 5 things booked/blocked for the day, with plenty of breaks in between or time bookending the day for self care.
This balanced approach to scheduling allows you to become a person who makes and keeps commitments. It’s how you fulfill promises… to your boss, your spouse, kids, family, friends….and most importantly, to yourself.
Go ahead, take a look at your schedule/planner. What superfluous things are there that you aren’t realllllllly committed to??
Get rid of them.
Boil it down to the things to which you can make a true commitment (promise) and follow through.
Then get busy fulfilling those promises one by one.
