I got a medal, plaque, and got to stand on the 1st place podium for a photo, and everything! It was a pretty cool experience 😁😁😁
I want to use this example to illustrate how powerful MINDSET is, and how the wrong mindset could have ruined my day.
Imagine if instead of being proud of and excited about WINNING, I said the following things:
“Well, yeah, I won…. But it was only the Duathlon. It’s not like I won the triathlon. If I had to swim, I probably wouldn’t have won.”
“I know I won, but there were only 35 people that were competing in this particular event. It’s not like I won against 350 people. THAT would have been cool!”
These statements completely dismiss the fact that I WON the event. It just takes all the excitement, pride, and accomplishment right out of it….and minimizes it down to something that I can’t be proud of. Not only that, I could easily feel like I didn’t do enough, or that my efforts should have been better, if I wanted to have a “real” win.
Why am I bringing this up? Because I hear the equivalent minimization of accomplishment all the time when it comes to weight loss and fitness goals. I hear things like:
“I know I lost 3 pounds… but it’s only 3 pounds. It’s not like I lost 5 or 10.”
“I know my strength is improving, but it’s not like I can lift double what I did a few months ago. That would be awesome!”
“Yeah, my energy is improving, I’m sleeping better, and my body is less sore… but I haven’t lost a lot of weight yet.”
Minimizing and downplaying perfectly awesome wins is dangerous. It takes what we work so hard to accomplish, and washes it all away. Over the long haul, it teaches us that our efforts will neverbe good enough, and we are always missing the mark.
A positive mindset - one that celebrates wins and lifts you up - is crucial… not just for weight loss or fitness, but for feeling happy and fulfilled in life overall.
